Murder accused Mahendra Bishundial had inquired from his friend Mervin Marcus about information relating to sales made by Edun’s Poultry Farms. This is according to Marcus, who testified on Monday, when the retrial of Bishundial continued before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Georgetown.
Bishundial is on trial before a 12-member mixed jury for the murder of Aga Khan, a truck driver, who was attached to Edun’s Poultry Farms. A police release had stated that Khan was attacked by four men, one of whom was armed with a handgun and others with knives.
Khan was driving motor lorry GJJ 2806, owned by Edun’s Poultry Farms, east along Busby Dam, Craig, East Bank Demerara, when the men walked into the path of the vehicle causing the driver to stop.
One of the men then approached Khan and demanded cash. He was shot to his neck in the process. Investigations were carried out and Bishundial was arrested and charged.
Bishundial is being represented by Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes. Leading the State’s case are prosecutors Lisa Cave and Orinthia Schmidt, who called Marcus to the witness box.
According to Marcus, he and Bishundial had been friends, since they both attended the Friendship Secondary School. He added that they graduated around the same time. Marcus disclosed that he and Khan were two of the company’s salesmen who worked on the truck.
When probed by the prosecutor, Marcus said that he recalled Bishundial had inquired from him about the company’s sales and he told him that “dem people (the company) does mek de load (a lot of money), but it does be in cheques.” The witness told the court that Bishundial was in the habit of asking him to send credit to his mobile phone, to which he would do.
Also testifying was Saeed Edun, who told the court that Khan was one of his employees. According to Edun, a poultry farmer, on that tragic day, Khan collected the keys to Canter truck GJJ 2806, while another employee uplifted the bill books and a cellular phone.
Edun said that around 17:00hrs that said day, he received a phone call from his wife, which caused him to leave their home at Busby Dam, Craig, East Bank Demerara. The witness said that the Canter truck was parked along the dam and he saw Aga Khan and another employee lying in a crouching position.
The poultry farmer recalled that he transported the injured men to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, after which, he left for the Grove Police Station to inquire about what had transpired. He disclosed that a total of $48,000 was missing from the Canter truck.
This is Bishundial’s second trial for the offence. His first trial in May before Justice James Bovell-Drakes ended in a hung jury. Consequently, Bishundial was ordered to face a new trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara assizes.
