At a simple but significant ceremony held last weekend, New York East Canje Reunion donated $210,000 to the executives of the newly resuscitated Rose Hall Estate Cricket Club. In presenting the cash on behalf of the donor, former national senior cricketer and coach Hubern Evans said that the funds is to help the club acquire good quality covers for the pitch and urged the recipient to raise the balance of the cost and purchase it as soon as possible. He added that the Association is always happy to give back to charity in the East Canje area and this followed many other donations including the annual cash incentives given to the top performers in the National Grade Six Assessment 2018, which amounted to over US$4,000.
Receiving the cash on behalf of the cricket club, Vice President Charran Singh thanked the NY East Canje Reunion for their timely and kind donation. He said that the club was dormant for many years after being one of the top clubs there. It has produced the first test cricketer from the area, Leonard Baichan. He added that the venue once had first class status and hosted several games before the sudden decline.
Singh promised that they will raise the difference in the cost and purchase the covers shortly. He boasted that since the club was resuscitated, it now plays First Division cricket again and participates in all competitions run by the Berbice Cricket Board. The club has already produced junior cricketers for Berbice with some going on to the national teams. In closing, he thanked the Association for their continued support.
