The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has won the last 17 National Boxing Tournaments since the inaugural one was held in 1966 at the Police Training School, but on Friday Night the Soldiers lost three of their four bouts on the opening night of the Terrence Ali National Boxing Championships at the National Gymnasium.
After a late start of over an hour, a handful of fans in the stands, including President of the St Marten Boxing Association Shawn Blair, watched as FYF’s Seon Griffith and Police’s Dewani Lampkin defeated their GDF counterparts in entertaining match-ups.
The first night’s Card, which included two Exhibition bouts, began with the talented 13-year-old Colin Williams of Harpy Eagles (HE) out boxing Rose Hall Jammers’ Travis Sancho to beat the Berbician in a Junior 29kg contest before HE’s Kevon Mulling gained a split decision verdict over FYF’s Fitz Heywood in a Junior 62kg battle.
Albert Thomas engaged his GDF stable match Anil Chaitraj in the first exhibition bout before the FYF pair of Richard Subrattee and Richard Howard matched gloves in the other exhibition match.
The first of four Elite bouts between Griffith and GDF’s Julius Kesney proved to an entertaining display of fistic fury with both fighters coming out with all guns blazing.
They traded punches and went after each other with nice combinations and when the dust had settled after three rounds of the fast paced contest, Griffith emerged victorious in the 52kg Flyweight affair.
The 52kg Junior Welterweight clash between Policeman Lampkin and Soldier Kevin McKenzie was a pulsating contest with the Cop leading with his left which was followed up with hard right to the head of his man.
But McKenzie retaliated with wicked shots of his own as both fighters threw punches in bunches as the pace intensified as the fight progressed.
However, the fighters tied up each other and there was more holding as the boxers began to tire. McKenzie seemed to be energised by the beating of drums by the GDF drummers and scored with a one/two to the head of the taller Lampkin who counter punched with a couple of jabs to eventually win the close fight by a split decision.
HE’s Kevin Allicock, the brother of Caribbean Boxing Championships Bantamweight Gold Medallist Keevin Allicock who won silver in the Boys flyweight at last year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas, gained a split decision over GDF’s Kevin Isaacs after being given a standing 8 count in the opening stanza of their flyweight clash.
In the last fight of the night Welterweight Quincy Boyce had a TKO in the third round over his GDF colleague.
The three-night card ends tonight with the finals and the action is scheduled to start 19:00hrs and admission is $500 for stands and $1,000 for Ring side.
