Murder accused Naresh Ramjohn was sentenced to 55 ½ years in jail by Justice Navindra Singh in the Berbice High Court in 2014. He is now facing a second trial for the same murder.
Ramjohn, 39, was found guilty of murdering Anthony Samaroo, called ‘Scare Dem’, 28, of Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, on July 2, 2008, at Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue.
The man is on trial in the Berbice High Court before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and a mixed Jury. Ramjohn is going through the procedure again after his conviction was set aside by the Guyana Court of Appeal following submission by attorney at law Mursaline Bacchus.
Ramjohn, through the same lawyer, had appealed his conviction and sentence on a number of grounds.
When the matter began, attorneys at law Arudranauth Gossai and Surihya Sabsook, appeared for the accused.
Attorney at Law Mandel Moore is prosecuting the case.
The state’s case is that on the day in question there was a confrontation at Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue between the Ramjohn brothers and the Samaroo brothers which led to the death of Anthony Samaroo. He was reportedly bludgeoned to death.
Anthony Samaroo was later found lying on the ground in a pool of blood. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Three witnesses have been called so far by the prosecution. They are Detective Corporal Denesh Baichu, Sergeant Dexter Brandt and Government Pathologist Vivikananda Brijmohan.
Dr. Brijmohan, who performed the post mortem examination at the New Amsterdam Hospital, had revealed that he died from shock and haemorrhage due to multiple stab wounds.
The matter is continuing.
