In moving ahead with its environmental awareness campaign, the Essequibo Tourism Association will be targeting the Charity community this weekend with a cleanup campaign.
The initiative which is part of the region’s Tourism Awareness Month activities, will be targeting the two ports of entry within the Pomeroon/Supenaam region, said Mrs. Maria Lord- Lewis, the president of the Region Two Tourism Association.
According to Mrs. Lord-Lewis, the Charity and Good/Hope ports play an integral role in promoting the region’s tourism. The Good Hope ferry and speedboat stellings, is the region’s first impression to tourists and visitors visiting from the country’s capital, Georgetown.
The Charity port on the other hand is located in the extreme north end on the Essequibo Coast.
This port is the gateway between the Essequibo Coast and the hinterland areas; the Barima Waini Region [Region One] and even Venezuela.
This publication understands that the initiative will be a collaborative effort between the Regional Democratic Council and the Tourism Association. It was also revealed that the association will be focusing primarily on education, as it moves to improve awareness on how to keep the environment clean.
On board the initiative will be the various NDCs, Pooran Brothers and representatives from the environmental health department.
Since the campaign entitled ‘Keep it Clean’ also caters for the younger population, Ms. Lord-Lewis said that students from the Charity Dormitory and other youth groups will also be on board the initiative. The cleanup campaign in the Good Hope community is expected to commence on November 25 and November 26.
According to the Regional Chairman, Mr. Devenand Ramdatt the RDC will again collaborate with the Tourism Association to implement a forum on courtesy.
This forum, he explained, will target the minibus and hire car operators; vendors, speed boat operators, hotel operatives and restaurant owners.
