All systems are in place for this weekend’s Terrence Alli National Open boxing championships which is being hosted by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue from tomorrow to Sunday.
The event, which is being held in tribute to former National Champion Terrence Alli, will see 15 anticipated grand amateur throw-downs each night from 19:00hrs sharp.
The medical and weigh-in for the competition will be tomorrow at the host venue with over 40 pugilists from over 10 gyms expected.
Top fighters who will be looking to reassert their dominance in the amateur arena include former champions in Jason Barker of Republican Boxing Gym, Dennis Thomas of Police Boxing Gym, Colin “Superman” Lewis (Junior Welterweight champion) of GDF, Keevin Allicock (Bantamweight champion) of FYF, Dennis Thomas (Light Heavyweight champion) of GPF.
In the meat of the action will be Caribbean Middleweight champion, Desmond Amsterdam of GDF gym but the lightweight division will be open since the last Champion, Joel Williamson of Rose Hall Jammers boxing gym in Berbice, has gone professional, so a new champion in this division will be crowned.
Defending champions, the Guyana Defence Force Gym have won this competition for the past 16 years but stiff competition from the Republican, Forgotten Youth Foundation and Guyana Police Force gyms are anticipated.
According to Technical Director of the GBA, Terrence Poole, this tournament will give the national selectors the ideal forum for examining abilities and a National team will go into camp soon after for the Caribbean Boxing Championships which will be hosted in Guyana next month at the Cliff Anderson
Admission to the venue is $500 for each night; $1000 ringside.
