The Farfan and Mendes Junior Skill Level Tournament began on Tuesday at the Georgetown Club Inc. courts. First to serve off was Tiana Gomes against Romaro Muniram in a category G match up. After a run of three strong serves, Gomes pulled out ahead 3/0, but Muniram took charge thereafter and did not concede another point to take the first game 11/3. On similar form he secured the second game 11/2 to win the match 2/0.
Category D saw an even matchup between Teija Edwards and Beau Fernandes with their contest going to five games. It was anyone’s game as the girls battled it out with each having a strong run of points in their respective victories. Beau held out in the third for a 14/12 win but in the end Edwards pulled through to take the match 7/11, 11/6, 12/14, 11/6, 11/8.
In category B, recently returned Demetrius DeAbreu came up against the ever improving Mohryan Baksh and both entertained spectators with long rallies, superb drops and skilful returns. DeAbreu fought hard to fend off an eager Baksh, and after conceding a well-earned game to the younger player, emerged triumphant with an 11/4, 6/11, 11/7, 11, 7 win.
Also showing much improved form was Lucas Jonas against star player Abosaide Cadogan, as he surprisingly pushed her to the full five games. Jonas’s solid drives and powerful cross courts forced Cadogan to stretch herself and call upon her outstanding agility on court to keep ahead. Jonas was clever in placement and switched pace to wrong foot Cadogan, but she proved too much and secured her victory with well executed returns and great lengths; finishing up 11/7, 9/11, 11/6, 12/14, 11/4.
Louis DaSilva, Christiana Fernandes and the Persuad siblings; Dhiren and Aishani, were among the first night winners of the Farfan and Mendes 2018 Skill level tournament.
Play continues tomorrow evening from 6pm where the first matches of Category A and H will take place alongside the next bouts of the other categories.
