Robberies occur every day in Georgetown.
However, as the Christmas season approaches, the frequency of robberies is known to escalate.
On Friday last, while walking back from the iconic Courts’ Christmas light-up event, two young Kaieteur News reporters were accosted and robbed on the intersection of Croal Street and the Avenue of the Republic.
At about 19:30 hrs, reporter Kemol King said that he saw a group of about five suspicious looking men at the corner of the road. As he moved to tell his co-workers to run, someone grabbed him and put him in a chokehold.
At this point, the scene had become chaotic. As some in the crowd screamed, three others held King and proceeded went through his pockets.
Fearing for his safety, he stopped resisting and the robbers relieved him of $4000 in cash and his smartphone valued over $110,000.
The second victim, another young reporter, Tracey Squires recalled walking along the intersection with King joking and laughing, and suddenly being struck on her head. The next thing she recalled was opening her eyes and finding herself lying on the road.
She said that she looked over to see her colleague, King, limp on the ground in a chokehold. The attackers had already taken her purse, so she clung to her phone and started running.
The other two individuals who were with them, including reporter Sauchel Giles, ran to a nearby police officer to report the incident. While accompanying them back to the scene of the attack, a woman approached them shouting that “a group of boys were around the corner robbing people.”
When King was contacted, he reported that with the assistance of a friend he made his way home. Squires was taken to hospital but was not admitted.
This publication understands that multiple robberies occurred that night in the area.
