When an ambulance is traversing the roadways it is customary that the driver of other vehicles will pull to the side of the road.
However, this was not the case yesterday evening, when the driver of a route 32 minibus decided to trail the ambulance, in a reckless attempt to beat the traffic.
This led to almost tragic consequences.
As the bus, BTT 5707, was approaching the Leonora Police Station, the vehicle collided with the front right side wheel of a Toyota Rav 4, PSS 6776.
The bus then overturned, resulting in injury to all of its passengers.
Kaieteur News understands that all the passengers sustained injuries and were quickly escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital by police ranks from the Leonora Station.
At least five of the passengers sustained injuries.
Personal belongings of the passengers were scattered across the roadway, while streaks of blood were in the bus and on the roadway.
There were also skid marks some 100 feet from the spot where the bus overturned.
“This is a direct result of speeding and carelessness. This bus driver decided to follow the ambulance. The bus clipped the front wheel of the vehicle and toppled over. The bus driver kept trailing the ambulance like he got an emergency too,” an eyewitness said.
The ambulance was transporting a patient to Georgetown and had just come off the ferry from Supenaam on the Essequibo Coast.
The driver of the minibus was taken into custody.
