The skilful Kaden Wellington was again the star of the show as he scored a brace and got support from Jeremiah Griffith and Jamal Fraser with a goal each as St Pius dethroned West Ruimveldt Primary in an entertaining final of the seventh annual COURTS U-11 Pee Wee football tournament last evening at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on Carifesta Avenue.
Wellington’s goals, scored in each 20-minute half, took his tally to 15 from eight matches and led St Pius, who dominated the contest from start to finish, to a 4-1 win against the defending champions under floodlights.
Wellington was assisted by Jeremiah Griffith and Jamal Fraser who netted second half goals before West Ruimveldt Primary’s Emanuel Phillips scored the consolation in the second minute of injury time by then the game, watched by a large and noisy crowd, was all but over.
The pint size 10-year Wellington displayed a level of skill that belied his age and in the eight minute dribbled his way past the defenders and found the back of the net from inside the box to give his team the lead.
St Pius enjoyed the bulk of the possession to the extent that their custodian was not tested once and at the end of the opening stanza the score read St Pius 1, West Ruimveldt 0.
After a 10-minute period West Ruimveldt tried to increase the tempo but their shots on goal were saved before Wellington fired a shot from the left flank the beat the diving keeper and go past St Agnes’s Justin Alcindor’s 14 goals with a record six of them coming in Alcindor’s game against Colaaco Primary.
St Pius were not done yet and it was soon 4-nil when Frazer and Griffith scored in rapid succession before Phillips scored the lone goal for the former Champions.
The third place encounter ended in a 3-nil win by penalty kicks for Tucville Primary after their keenly contest battle with Mocha Primary was goalless after full and extra time.
The Hero for Tucville was their Goalie John Harry who saved the first three shots from the penalty spot.
Technical Director of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Ian Greenwood stated that the sponsors (Banks DIH Ltd, Courts and Petra Organisation) had done a fantastic job.
“There was a good level of football shown by these young children on the pitch which is good for Guyana’s football’s future,” Greenwood added.
For their efforts St Pius collected one Acer Lap Top Computer, the winner’s Trophy and Medals along with full Kit and Uniforms, while the Runners-up received a 40-inch Flat screen TV, Trophy and Medals
The competition started with 32 teams with St Pius (winner), West Ruimveldt (2nd), Tucville, Mocha, St Agnes, North Georgetown, Golden Grove, St Ambrose, South Ruimveldt, Mae’s, Enterprise, Maurius, Plaisance Colaaco, Soesdyke and Timheri finishing in that order in super-16 play-offs.
