Yesterday’s opening day of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club’s (GMRSC) Ignite race meet, which also serves as the final leg of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC), has indicated ominous signs of the South Dakota’s record being under threat.
The opening day featured qualifiers in groups 1-4 and the inaugural SR3 radical championship along with the first of three races in groups one and two.
This year will be a historic occasion since it’s the first time Guyanese racing fans will be able to witness competitive radical races with a full field (nine) of cars expected to go all out for top honours today.
Starting the radicals’ race in pole position will be Barbados’ Mark Maloney who clocked a best time of 32.978 seconds during qualifying. Guyana’s Calvin Ming was second fastest with 32.986 seconds, current championship leader Stuart Maloney of Barbados third with 33.157 seconds, while Kristian Jeffrey (GUY) was fourth with 33.200 seconds.
Time trials aren’t counted when setting records but if any of the top four radical drivers emulate their performances today, the circuit’s 33.3 seconds record will be shattered.
Team Mohamed’s Enterprise (bikes) holds the track record which they set in 2016 and their three riders will occupy the top pole positions with Richard Cooper of England first in the Supersport after clocking an impressive 33.5 seconds in his first outing at the Timehri circuit.
Brothers, Harry and Matthew Truelove will be placed first and second respectively in the Superstock after clocking 33.9 and 34 seconds respectively.
When the action revs off this morning from 08:00hrs sharp, 2014 and 15′ champion, Kristian Jeffrey will start in Pole position for the group four class followed by Mark Maloney, Rupie Sewjattan, Mark Vieira and Quinlan Lall in second to fifth respectively.
In group three, Trinidad and Tobago’s (T&T) Kristian Boodoosingh will be on pole followed by his countryman Ronald Wortman, Rameez Mohamed and Nazim Gafoor, while Marc Gill (T&T) will be fifth.
Gill, the current leader in the CMRC group two, had a better qualifying round in his favoured class and will start in pole position ahead of Shan Seejattan (GUY), Chet Singh (GUY) and Bajan brothers Kurt and Mark Thompson (fourth and fifth respectively).
In the local Choke Starlet Cup, Anand Ramchand who is well on his way to winning the championship got an added boost after qualifying with the best time yesterday, ahead of today’s triple treat Starlet showdown. Motilall Deodass and Vishal Sawh are second and third respectively.
Three races were completed yesterday instead of the scheduled five which leaves a packed 24-race programme for today which the droves of fans that are expected to be at South Dakota will relish.
Yesterday’s winners include Zalim Mohamed in the street cross (bikes) class, while Mohamed Admed and Raymond Seebaran won the sports and Street Tuner respectively.
Today’s action gets underway at 08:00hrs sharp.
