Ranks from the Guyana Defence Force were summoned to the Timehri Prisons on Tuesday after inmates started a minor disturbance, allegedly over the interception of a quantity of marijuana.
Chief Prison Officer Gladwin Samuels said that some inmates set “a piece of sponge” on fire, and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was put into effect.
He said that the disturbance lasted between 30 minutes to an hour.
Kaieteur News understands that the disturbance occurred at around 07.00 hrs on Tuesday after some 1300 grams of marijuana was found in a farming area outside the prison.
It is believed that the marijuana was to have been thrown over the prison fence or taken to an inmate. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
Just last Saturday, a remand prisoner and a warder were stabbed during a dispute at the Timehri Prison.
The prisoner, who is still hospitalized, was stabbed eight times, while the prison officer was stabbed in the arm.
The inmate was reportedly wounded by a prisoner who was convicted for murder.
The rank was injured when he and two of his colleagues attempted to part the inmates.
