The Annual National Draughts Championship got underway at the National Gymnasium with ten of the country’s top players contesting the A and B categories for top honors.
Khemraj Pooranmall with 27 points emerged the winner in the senior division. Pooranmall was out of competition for over one year but came out in full form to capture the winning stake. Godfrey George with 23 points took the second position, while Jiaram with 21 points was dethroned of his crown to number three in the rankings. Ulric Brathwaite from Kuru Kururu was defeated in a tie breaker with Jiaram to earn the fourth spot.
In the junior category Tuschen player Devanand Persaud with 20 points defended his title. This is the second consecutive win for Devanand in this division, by virtue he has now moved up to the senior level. Esan Anderson with 14 points emerged second, while Lyndon Heywood with 12 points placed third. Dexter Johnson from Linden took the fourth position with 8 points.
All four players from each categories were awarded with trophies, while the top three were given an additional small incentive.
The Championship concludes Sunday which would see action being played on the International 100 square boards.
