Following intense arguments and lengthy deliberations, the Court of Appeal yesterday reversed the conviction and 56-year jail term imposed on Redrick Alexander who was tried back in 2014, and found guilty of murder.
In November 2010, Alexander was charged and remanded to prison for the murder of his childhood friend, Carl Thomas, 55, who he is alleged to have fatally stabbed during an argument over some missing clothes.
The incident occurred at Lot 35 John Street, Lodge, Georgetown, the residence of Thomas. From reports Thomas and Alexander grew up together and lived like ‘brothers’.
Following a preliminary inquiry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, Alexander was committed to stand trial for the offence at the High Court in Georgetown where he appeared before Justice Navindra Singh and a 12-member jury. In April, 2014 he was convicted and sentenced to 56 years imprisonment by the trial judge.
Subsequently, Alexander, through his Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes, filed an appeal. The lawyer had addressed the court on a number of points, he said. He concluded that the courts formed an erroneous basis on which Alexander was convicted and sentenced.
The appeal was heard by Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Yonette Cummings-Edwards, Justice of Appeal Dawn Gregory and High Court Judge Brassington Reynolds.
After careful deliberations, the presiding Judges set aside the conviction and ordered a retrial for Alexander, whose case was remitted to the High Court where he will face a new trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
