DEAR EDITOR,
I read with much interest a letter published in the Stabroek News tiled ‘As a Woman the ‘shut up’ admonition resonated in an offensive manner, by B. Beniprasad Rayman.
Her letter dealt with a growing cancer in Guyana and some other parts of the world. In addition to Ms. Rayman’s excellent letter, I sense an old prejudice, which goes beyond the gender issue.
When I read of the verbal exchange between Hon. R’td Justice Kennard and the sitting Her Worship the Mayor, it is clear that the likes of the Judge have forgotten the time honoured respect for certain office holders.
The Mayor of the Capital City ranks high up in the order of precedence.
Unfortunately, it appears that the Judge has ignored this and sees the Mayor as someone below his class.
I called the Immediate Past Mayor and Former Prime Minister, Hon. Hamilton Green, and asked what was at stake on the matter and he chuckled and said ‘I don’t think His Lordship would have risked such impudence at a COI.’
If our society is to achieve noble heights, we must practice mutual respect and understand functional authority.
As a word of passing, we have enough problems with our judiciary.
Eric Moseley
