Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Friday released a construction worker on bail in the sum of $250,000 after a charge of rape was read to him.
Calvin Mann, 26, of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, is accused of engaging in sexual penetration with a 15-year-old girl.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that between August 1 and August 31, 2018, at Timehri, East Bank Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16.
Mann was represented by Attorney-at-Law Stanley Moore, who asked the court to grant his client bail in reasonable amount.
However, Police Prosecutor Simone Payne was opposed to bail being granted to Mann, citing the serious nature of the offence and the fact that the defendant and the victim are known to each other and live in the same area.
According to information, the teen and Mann were involved in an intimate relationship and her family found out.
The victim’s family then went and reported the matter to the police, hence an investigation was carried out and Mann was arrested and charged.
Mann was instructed to make his next court appearance on October 23 when he will appear before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly.
