Fred Ryan, Jamal Khashoggi’s former boss, has called the Saudi Arabian Government’s statement a blatant lie to cover up the murder of Khashoggi. He believes that the murder was orchestrated by the highest levels of the Saudi Government. Ryan, who is the publisher of the Washington Post, released a statement yesterday condemning the Saudi government for Khashoggi’s alleged murder.
Ryan’s statement reads: “The government of Saudi Arabia has shamefully and repeatedly offered one lie after another in the nearly three weeks since Jamal Khashoggi disappeared in their Istanbul consulate.” He further stated that “Offering no proof, and contrary to all available evidence, they now expect the world to believe that Jamal died in a fight following a discussion. This is not an explanation. It is a coverup.”
The events surrounding the journalist’s death had started when he travelled to Turkey with his fiancée to obtain divorce papers from his previous marriage. He had left his wife outside of the Saudi Consulate in Turkey. When he did not emerge after the consulate closed, his fiancée called the police and reported him as missing.
Reuters had reported that “The initial assessment of the Turkish police is that Mr. Khashoggi has been killed at the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul. We believe that the murder was premeditated and the body was subsequently moved out of the consulate.” The Turkish Prime Minister called an immediate investigation into the matter, following this statement.
The Saudi government swiftly responded to the allegations made by the Turkish Police, stating that Jamal Khashoggi left the consulate on the day of the incident.
To this, Turkey officials claimed that they are in possession of audio evidence of Khashoggi’s murder, recorded on his Apple Smartwatch. The files had been uploaded to Khashoggi’s iCloud and were duplicated on his smartphone.
A Turkish security source told Reuters that a team of 15 Saudi nationals, including officials close the Saudi crown leadership, had arrived in Turkey at 3:28 AM on the day of his disappearance and entered the consulate before he did. Turkish investigators said that men were seen loading boxes from the consulate into a black vehicle. They believed the boxes to contain the chopped up parts of Khashoggi’s body. They further reported that the team of officials went to the Saudi consul’s residence after they left the consulate. Both jets reportedly left Turkey at 21:00 that night.
Their claims were later corroborated by a release from Turkish officials, which stated that information from the audio recordings they obtained indicate that Salah Al Tabiqi, a Saudi forensic specialist, told the others in the room to listen to music while he dismembers Khashoggi. A recording leaked by a Turkish newspaper also suggests that Khashoggi was beheaded and that his fingers were cut off. The recording also caught the Saudi Consul General telling the operatives to “do this outside. You will put me in trouble.”
Telegraph UK reported that Turkish investigators searching the consulate found fresh coats on its walls. The Turkish police and prosecutors had inspected the consulate for eight hours and widened their search to include the Saudi Consul General’s residence, a short distance away.
Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has so far refused to publicly share their audio evidence. Analysts say that the government is withholding certain bases of evidence to maintain leverage over the Saudi government.
On October 20, Saudi state TV reports indicated that the government’s initial investigation into the incident revealed that Jamal Khashoggi died in the consulate. The official position of the government was that Jamal Khashoggi died as a result of an argument that culminated in a fatal brawl. They said that he died of strangulation. They also reported that they have formed a ministerial committee to restructure their intelligence services, and that they have commenced a purge of officials, detaining 18 persons so far.
Multiple governments have condemned the Saudi monarchy for what they believe to be a grave atrocity. Consequently, the government of Guyana has come under pressure to release a statement condemning the Saudi government, who leads the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), from which Guyana has been offered a US$900M resource package to finance multiple developmental projects.
