Two GDF ranks who were yesterday arraigned before Magistrate Esther Sam in the Suddie Magistrate’s Court, for the alleged rape of a 26 year old woman, on the Essequibo Coast, were both granted bail.
The accused army privates were identified as Rawlston Reid, 22, of Dochfour Housing Scheme, East Coast of Demerara, and Isaiah Rawlins, 21, of Wisroc, Linden. The charge laid against the men is that on the 13th of October, last, they engaged in sexual relations with a 26-year-old female, in which forceful penetration was used.
The men, who were both represented by an attorney, were not required to plead to the indictable charge. The prosecution on the other hand, after considering the seriousness of the offence, objected to bail.
Counsel Latchmin Dindyal who represented the accused, Isaiah Rawlins, told the court that his client has a fixed place of residence in Linden, and therefore is not at flight risk. Dindyal also noted that his client is still employed by the Guyana Defence Force, and will be stationed at the Anna Regina base until his next court appearance. The attorney also pointed out that his client has been in custody since last Saturday.
The second accused, Rawlston Reid was represented by a legal aid lawyer. His lawyer also pointed out that he has a permanent place of residence, and is already stationed as a private at the Anna Regina GDF base, and cannot therefore leave the Essequibo Coast.
Magistrate Sam, after deliberating mainly on the fact that the accused men are still attached to the GDF, and are not flight risks, granted the men bail to the tune of $300,000 each. The men were also given stern warnings to stay 200 ft. away from the virtual complainant, her family and friends. They are to also report to the Anna Regina Police Station at 9am every Monday.
