A West Coast Demerara family is trying to locate a woman whom they claim defrauded them of a significant sum of cash, valuing over some $400,000.
Urias and Emily Cornelius who both live in Tuschen on the West Coast Demerara, are now claiming that a woman who was identified as Shelly Ramnarine conducted a fraudulent transaction with them on July 12, last.
According to the victims, the woman promised that she would secure for them house lots in the Zeelugt Housing Scheme. The woman reportedly promised that she would also build houses for them since her objective is to help the poor.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman requested some $60,000 from Urias Cornelius, who is now deceased, to purchase materials to construct the house she promised. She also requested money to fill out the necessary documentations for the house lot. The monies that totaled some $103,000 were reportedly paid to the woman, but the materials and house lots were never purchased.
The man’s sister in law, Emily Cornelius, was also defrauded of some $300,000 as the woman claimed she will purchase for her a house, land and car.
Though the woman promised that receipt will be served, the victims alleged that they did not receive any receipt for the transaction.
Robert Junior, whose mother was also a victim of the scam said, “When we asked to see the house lot or the materials this woman jumped up and said she can’t do it today because she very busy.
“Every time they requested to see the house lots and materials she always has an excuse…My grandfather requested to speak to her boss, and this woman called my grandfather and put on her husband and him pretended to talk as the boss trying to make it sound official.”
Robert Junior, who is also from Tuschen, said his mother paid the woman $135,000 for a house lot, but never received a receipt, or saw for herself the house lot the woman claimed she purchased. After months, however, he managed to reclaim the cash.
He added, “She actually got my mom to pay her $135,000 cash and she said that she would’ve bring the money to my mother and that never happened… I had to be on this woman back before she returned this $135,000 and she still owes my grandfather who died and now that my grandmother is a widow she needs this money.”
In a video recording shown to this publication, the woman is heard and seen acknowledging the transaction.
“In all is $103,000. By weekend you gon get that back because that ain’t got nothing to do with the land or so that was to start build the house.”
In another video recorded, later, the woman is heard again saying, “When meh husband come home yuh gon get it. Bear with me the two days cause a gon tek he money and give yuh back. So as soon as he come if not today d’sure tomorrow. As soon as he come home meh gon send it.”
Kaieteur News understands that the woman, who was renting a house in Zeelugt, has now disappeared and the outstanding debts have not being repaid. Though a report was made at the Leonora Police station against the woman, there still remains no word on her whereabouts.
