I became highly concerned when I read in a section of the press that Laura George of the Amerindian Peoples Association (APA) will be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate degree.
I can understand Mr. Yesu Persaud, Eddy Grant and Jay Sobraj being awarded this doctorate degree but not Laura George. What are the criteria for being offered an Honorary doctorate degree?
Is this the level the Honorary doctorate degree has dropped to? This is a total embarrassment and I am calling on the Academic board of the University of Guyana (U.G) to withdraw this honorary doctorate degree from Laura George. What is her contribution to Guyana’s development at her age?
It was the APA and Laura George who allegedly influenced some Amerindian communities in Region Eight and the Upper Mazaruni Amerindian communities in Region Seven not to accept Amerindian land demarcations.
This is currently among other issues affecting the Amerindian Land Titling (ALT) project from being successful, further causing the said project to be further extended.
Giving a detractor to Guyana’s ALT project an Honorary Doctorate degree is totally an insult to Guyana’s Indigenous Peoples. Let this Honorary Doctorate be withdrawn quickly.
