Dear Editor,
Throughout my time at the University of Guyana there were many ups and downs. The Law department had a Jamaican Head of department who wasn’t adept to the Guyanese Culture. We had lecturers who weren’t qualified Practitioners and we had to deal with what some could say was nothing less than discrimination.
What do I mean by discrimination? Ask any law student who entered the programme while Miss S.B was lecturing the course. How does a student turn up for Law of Torts 1 and 2, attend all the tutorials, prepare all of the necessary answers to past examination questions and then either get a C or the dreaded F grade. It just never made sense.
She was allowed to terrorize students for far too long until something was finally done about it. At this point, many students had already felt the consequences of her actions. It was if though she read a name on the papers or compared the Student identification number with the name and automatically put an F on the paper. It just never made any sense to the students-at-law.
The University of Guyana allows you to fail two subjects to be allowed a pass with credit but for some it was if though you were almost certain of failing the two courses taught by the said senior lecturer. Many complaints were made to the then Jamaican head of department but nothing was done about it.
Mr. Ronald Singh then took over the law department and tried to do something about it but once again the administration of the University of Guyana did nothing about it.
Can you imagine what it was like to go into examination knowing you had an 80% chance of failing? The word “terrorist” became quite prevalent. This begs the question as to why this was being done. Was it to ensure we repaid to do the course? Was it to ensure only a certain number of students were competing for the positions at the Hugh Wooding Law School?
Was it because certain students were of a certain race or background? Did she mark students down for absence? We probably won’t ever know. I actually failed both her courses and redid in another year and guess what my grades were when I redid them? B and B+! Did I make any changes to how I answered the questions? Absolutely not! How did I get those improved grades? Only God knows the answer.
Another question needs to be asked of the University of Guyana. We actually paid $5000 to have a grade reviewed. Were these assessments actually sent to be remarked? A few students did their own investigations and guess what was unearthed? The papers were never sent to Barbados for remarking. The corruption at the university was and probably continues to be ridiculous.
I can go on and on. I can state many more instances of corruption but let’s see if this hurried letter is published and what the feedback is.
Kind regards
Former Student At law
