– denies bribing cop
Christopher Gonsalves, 27, of 291 Independence Boulevard appeared in court yesterday to face two charges before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in relation to the possession of narcotic.
The unrepresented Gonsalves was asked to answer for the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and attempting to obstruct the course of justice by bribing a police officer.
It is alleged that Gonsalves, on October 3, last, at Punt Trench, Albouystown, had in his possession 530 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
It is also alleged that on the said date at Brickdam Police Station, Gonsalves wilfully attempted to obstruct or pervert the course of justice by offering $150,000 to police Sergeant George in order to prevent the institution of charges against him.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The Prosecutor told the court that on the day in question, acting on information, a Brickdam rank, dressed as a civilian, approached the defendant and inquired about purchasing narcotics, marijuana.
Gonsalves allegedly then rode away and came back with a black bag containing leaves and stems of the marijuana plant. The rank then identified himself to the defendant, alerted the other ranks and arrested Gonsalves and took him to Brickdam Police Station.
At the police station, the defendant requested to see the sergeant. Upon meeting Sergeant George, he then offered $150,000 to the sergeant with the request that no charges be instituted against him.
Sergeant George collected the money before telling the defendant of the charge. The money was lodged and the defendant remained in police custody.
In his defence, Gonsalves told the court that he had a $150,000 in his pocket when he was arrested so he asked the Sergeant to give the money to his family members.
However, after handing the money to the sergeant, he was told that he is trying to bribe the officer.
The prosecutor had no objections to bail for the charge relating to the attempted bribe and the magistrate placed the defendant on $200,000 bail.
However, for the charge relating to the possession of narcotics, the prosecutor objected to bail and the defendant was remanded until November 5.
