Dear Editor,
For the past 24 hours or more, there has been a strange hissing sound pervading the streets of Queenstown.
On close investigation, this sound is coming from GWI, where they appear to be drilling a well beside the Lamaha Canal on Vlissingen Road.
It appears that they need compressed air but that they have a compressor which is much too large and which necessitates “blowing off” excess air at regular and frequent intervals on a 24/7 basis.
The noise from this is totally unacceptable and excessive (as well as being non-cost-effective).
The fact that I can hear it in my house almost 600 meters away from the site over an area blocked in by houses and trees says enough.
For people living closer to the site, sleep must be impossible.
Editor, we have an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in this country.
Has GWI got an environmental permit for this work? Has it even measured the noise levels? Has the EPA even been consulted about this drilling?
Why must the populace have to put up with this excessive and needless noise?
Peter Bouchard
