Over the years, media experts have warned teenagers and the general public of the impact of social media on their lives. Whether it is positive or negative, the experts have made it clear that social media could either enhance one’s image or destroy it.
They claim that it is a dangerous medium for anyone seeking publicity. That say it is rather unfortunate that one of the two alleged suspects embroiled in a video sex scandal with a teenage girl was found dead shortly after the tape went viral on social media.
The sex video involving Sherwin Apple, which found its way on social media should be a wake-up call for all, especially youths, to heed the advice of media experts to beware of the perils of social media. Apple’s body was identified by his brother, Selwyn Apple. There were different accounts to his death. According to relatives, it appears that Apple, 41, a clothing vendor of William Street, Kitty and Silver Town, Linden became depressed and committed suicide after seeing the criticisms on social media regarding the alleged rape.
However, what relatives deemed to be a suicide has now turned into a murder probe as an autopsy conducted on the body of Apple revealed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to drowning. There ware compression marks on his neck leading to the conclusion that someone held his head under water.
Police confirmed that Apple had two pending court cases of rape, one with young lady, who is the daughter of a prominent Linden businessman. Investigations into the matter by the Childcare and Protection Agency are underway, but it could encounter problems because the police Commander of “E” Division (Linden/Kwakwani) has reported that the suspected female victim has denied that she is the person in the video and promised not to cooperate with any police or other investigations.
It is likely that the other suspect would not be charged if the young lady claimed that it is not her in the video or agreed with the relatives that the sex was consensual.
After viewing the video, many have expressed different opinions of the alleged sexual abuse. Some believe that the encounter was consensual, others, perhaps the majority, felt that it was rape and that the two perpetrators should be charged.
This is the latest in a number of sex videos involving young women that have been made public in Linden and other areas of the country. But this latest edition has created a frenzy and an outcry that such disgusting and heinous acts must be condemned by all in society. Health experts have claimed that sexual assault is a public health issue that is not solely the result of individual behavior. It may stem from the lack of spiritual or religious grounding and from society’s norms and values of what is right or wrong.
Reducing incidents of sexual assault would need a concerted effort by the government, community and religious organizations, non-governmental organizations and groups to raise awareness of this odious act and bolster the self-esteem of youths from depressed areas of the country or in needy situations.
Legislations must be enforced by the judiciary and schools, government agencies and religious groups must address the issue of sexual assault and its consequences on victims. Victims of sexual assault must have moral and spiritual support to help them overcome the trauma during their recovery period.
To rid this scourge from society, the government must embark on strategies, including the creation of jobs and social activities. It must allocate resources to aid in the fight against sexual crimes.
