Dear Editor,
I have written several times before about a frustrating trend that occurs at the Demerara Harbour Bridge every single morning of the week day. The problem continues to this day with no change at all from the police at the ‘D’ division.
Every morning as the lines build up with persons queuing to get onto the bridge, the police will let anyone that they want to drive on the wrong side of the road, essentially skipping the lines and going to the front. They call this the priority lane, and from my knowledge only emergency vehicles should be allowed to do this.
However the reality of the situation is very different. The ranks will let anyone they want to skip the line. Their friends, family members, neighbours, it does not matter. A regular person spends 40 minutes or more at 6:30 AM in the morning in that line, avoiding reckless drivers, concentrating not to hit anyone by accident, and there on the outside, dozens of vehicles are speeding by, going straight to the front.
All kinds of vehicles, from SUVs to old beat up hatchbacks, vehicles fully tinted, some of them even playing loud music do this. I cannot express in mere words the frustration felt by myself and other colleagues who go through the same experience every single day.
Recently an attorney gave in to his frustration with traffic police and that behaviour has resulted in him being charged. It is not right what he did, but one can understand where the rage comes from, especially when dealing with such officers who cannot perform their most basic of police functions without being corrupt.
I am calling on the relevant commanding officers to finally put a limit to this situation. It is not fair nor right, to have persons following the rules and doing the right things, and then to have literally dozens of vehicles breaking the rules, and being allowed to do so, just because the police officer is their friend.
