A Regional Agricultural Commercial Exhibition (RACE) spearheaded by the Region Ten Democratic Council was on Sunday staged in front of the Wismar Municipal Market.
The event drew farmers, producers and manufacturers from across the Region, including the far flung community of Hururu in the Berbice River and in Linden, Dallawalla and Medina’s Strait, a farming group of Wisroc.
The event which commenced just before midday, culminated at sundown.
Among the items on display, which were quickly scooped up by excited patrons, were art and craft exhibits, ground provisions, vegetables and a wide array of fruits, both fresh and preserved.
Region Ten Executive Officer, Orrin Gordon, speaking at the official opening of the inaugural activity posited, “Food Production is not glamorous; its hard work, and a lot of persons shy away from it.”
Gordon in reflecting on the issue, referred to an old adage, “He who feeds you controls you, so if you feed yourself you can control yourself!”
Further emphasizing his point, Gordon alluded to the floods in 2005, and the hardships suffered by those communities, including Region Ten, that had to depend on the flooded out areas for food.
Gordon disclosed that Regions Nine and Ten are currently the two Regions that would serve as pilots for agriculture production in the country. As a result, he said that, instead of there being four budgeted programme areas, for the year 2019, there will be five.
Scores of Lindeners, turned out for the activity and many expressed the view, that similar initiatives should be promoted throughout the Region, on a regular basis.
