A husband, his wife and his daughter-in-law who were allegedly found with a quantity of marijuana hidden in a barrel in their premises were all charged and remanded to prison yesterday.
Keith Barker, 64, his wife Cheryl Barker, 56 and their daughter-in-law, Loretta Chisholm, 25, were jointly charged after they appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on September 21, last, at Lot 2925 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, they had in their possession 42.5 kilograms of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
It was further alleged that on the same day in question, Chisholm had in her possession one kilogram of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
The last charge stated that Cheryl Barker on the same day had in her possession 628 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
They all denied the allegations after it was read to them in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The trio was all represented by Attorney-at-Law Dexter Todd who asked that his clients be released on bail because they had no knowledge of the drugs.
The lawyer added that he is surprised with the manner in which the police are dealing with the matter. He added that his clients were arrested and taken into custody because they were at home when the police conducted the search at the premises.
He added the son who is in custody admitted in a statement given to the Police that he is the owner of the drugs but was not brought to court for the charge to be read to him.
However, Police Prosecutor, Quinn Harris, objected to bail being granted to the defendants citing the serious nature of the offence, the penalty the charge attracts and the quantum of the narcotics.
The Prosecutor stated that on the day in question ranks from the Police Narcotics Branch acting on information went to the defendants’ home and conducted a search.
It was reported that a search was conducted in a bed room and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be narcotics were discovered hidden in a haversacks amongst curtains in the barrel.
Further checks were carried out in the bedrooms of Cheryl Barker and Chisholm where small quantities of marijuana were found in their possession.
They were all told of the offence and they denied knowledge of the marijuana, hence they were all taken into custody.
The Magistrate after listening to the Prosecution facts remanded the trio to prison. They were instructed to make their next court appearance on October 1.
