Two policemen found themselves on the wrong side of the law yesterday, when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to face criminal charges. The charges are in relation to an incident which occurred at the Coin Restaurant and Bar which reportedly operates a ‘Strip Club.’
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mahendra Singh, 32, of Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown and Police Corporal Christopher Dharamraj pleaded not guilty to separate charges which were read to them by Chief Magistrates Ann McLennan.
It is alleged that on August 15, last, ASP Singh wrongfully restrained Perry Barker, a taxi driver, at the Coin Restaurant and Bar and Pool Hall, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, preventing him from leaving. It was further alleged that on the same day, 30-year-old Corporal Dharamraj unlawfully assaulted Barker.
Both ASP Singh and Corporal Dharamraj were ordered to post $20,000 bail each.
According to facts presented by the Police Prosecutor, Singh and Dharamraj operate the entertainment spot at the G3 Mall located at Diamond, East Bank Demerara. It was revealed in court that on the day in question, Barker entered the Bar and became involved in an altercation with the two police ranks.
Corporal Dharamraj allegedly dealt Barker several cuffs and kicks about his body, while ASP Singh pushed him into a toilet, locking him inside. Barker reported the incident to police after escaping. Investigations were carried out and both ranks were charged.
Attorney-at-Law Bernard DaSilva appeared on behalf of the policemen. According to the lawyer, there is evidence that his client’s actions were in self defence. Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ordered the law enforcement officers to make their next court appearance on September 24.
