Eighteen Councillors of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council have voted in support of the conditions under which vendors will be relocated to the Route 42 minibus park during an extraordinary statutory meeting held at City Hall yesterday.
The Councillors agreed that 82 stalls would be built at the new facility. The wooden structures to be constructed are estimated to cost $400,000 each.
Council is still expected to provide washroom facilities. However in the interim, the Cevon‘s Disposal sanitary unit will be available to the vendors.
The decision came in light of Town Clerk Royston King telling the Council that the vendors agreed to construct their own stalls following discussions with officers of the Council. He noted that the Council is not financially capable to facilitate the construction.
“We already face a challenge in this regard; the Council is just not in a place financially to support this type of activity.”
Only those registered by the Council will be granted a spot at the new location, which excludes those who walk and sell, and have mobile vending activities on the wharf.
Mayor Patricia Chase-Green noted that each vendor would receive a written agreement as it relates the new facility.
“It must be made clear this is a temporary move until the new wharf and boardwalk are built. That must be spelt out in the contract or memorandum of understanding each vendor will be given to sign. “
City Engineer Colvern Venture told the Council that City Hall has already utilized $23M preparing the facility where the stalls will be relocated.
City Hall had originally agreed to construct 88 stalls to facilitate the relocation of the stallholders from the Stabroek Market wharf, which is in desperate need of repairs. The works are expected to last at least two years.
