The constant rise of crime in Guyana has been a worrying phenomenon to the business and working class.
Every day decent citizens are robbed and sometimes injured and killed but there is no improvement in our security system. Last Thursday I went to church for 6 p.m. to conduct a prayer meeting. I was alone so I came out to sit on the church bridge on a chair as other members were coming in.
A Chinese store was just about three hundred meters from where I was sitting. Suddenly I saw the police vehicle come in to the store I was told the store was robbed by bandits. It’s the second time this store was robbed in just a few weeks. A next Chinese store that’s further up the road was robbed the first day it was opened and a regular supermarket was robbed over ten times.
Now these rogue elements will sit at culverts smoking dope and rob people going to work early in the morning. They even jumped into my church yard and climbed on top the building to cut the zinc to get into the building but were unable to make an entry. It cost me another six hundred thousand dollars to put razor wire on my church fence. Just yesterday they robbed a poor lady selling coconuts and sweets on a stall and all these crimes are committed in broad daylight and the police never seem to be catching anyone.
Agriculture Road needs a Police Outpost and more police patrols. Sometimes I will see motorbike police just strolling along to ‘gaff’ or drink a few beers but they never catch anyone. The crime is not only here in this road it’s all over Guyana. I recently saw a new police commissioner and five deputy commissioners sworn in by the President but I really want to know what is their prerogative and vision about solving crime. These bandits are coming with high powered guns and many police officers are afraid to respond to calls when a robbery is in progress.
The outgoing American Ambassador mentioned to this Government that they must increase their security system as an oil producing nation but what he is saying to us seems to have gone on ”deaf ears.”
If our businesses are robbed daily and our hard working citizens are robbed daily, then they will migrate and our business community will be closed down and Guyana will become a ghost town full of rogues, thieves, drug pushers, prostitutes and dope smokers.
Crime seems to be a very profitable job. I was amazed to see some alleged Bank Robbers were out on half million dollars bail.
Our judicial system needs a complete overhaul.
also the DPP because the crime gets worst
The Scientist Albert Einstein wrote:’ ‘This world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.”
This Nation is not going to progress by speeches and cutting of ribbons. Good governance is about putting people’s interest above our own. It’s about time President Granger and his team of Vice Presidents step up their game to tackle this crime situation in Guyana before it escalates.
V.S. Naipaul was hated for his explicit writings when he said.
”The world is what it is; men who are nothing, who allow themselves to become nothing, have no place in it.”
My questions are: What have we achieved as a nation after 52 years of independence? Are we safe in this nation? How do we protect our citizens from crime? How do we reform the judiciary that seems very compromised and corrupt?
I need a response from our erudite political leaders of this nation. It’s either we get rid of crime and criminals or they will get rid of us.
May God help us.
Regards,
Rev.Gideon Cecil
