It may be a bit late for me to observe – the PNC held their free and fair party elections where party leaders were elected at a Congress of several hundred members.
But, in contrast, Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo has announced that the PPP presidential candidate would be chosen by the party’s central committee of a mere 35 members only.
Further, Mr. Jagdeo said that the chosen candidate would win over 50% of the votes, which is at least 18 of the 35 persons. Is this to be interpreted as an enlargement of the “gang of 8” into the “gang of 18”?
It would be far better to have the person who is desirous of being the next president to be selected/elected at a special Congress of party members, like the PNC did in 2018 with their chair and chairpersons, and in 2010/2011 with their presidential candidate.
The cards are already well stacked in the central committee, it seems as if this ‘election/selection’ has been fixed and will be forced upon the general membership to accept. Tell me, if Mr. Frank Anthony, who came in second at the 2008 Congress, was not elected by the central committee to be on the 15-members executive committee, why should I believe that he could be selected to be the party’s presidential candidate?
It is time that we demand democracy in the PPP. Let the members choose!
