Wilson Toledo, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) newly appointed Coaching Education Director, hit the ground running on Sunday last when mere hours after his arrival in Guyana to commence his contract with the local governing body.
Toledo was on hand to kick off the third match of the GFA-IMC ‘Stag Beer Revival Cup’ at the GFC Ground. Toledo’s arrival came on the heels of him being with the senior national team during the “Train and Play Camp” held in Brazil in preparation for the Jaguars’ first match of the CONCACAF Nations League next Thursday, September 6 at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
The Brazilian national has already begun the ground work necessary to fulfill his one-year assignment in Guyana by visiting the senior and youth tournaments of the GFA-IMC – the Stag Revival Cup and the Pele Alumni “Frank Watson” U15 Tournament to observe the talent on display.
Over the next weeks, he is scheduled to meet with the coaches of the Elite Clubs and interact with the Member Associations. The veteran coach looks forward to the challenge of improving football in Guyana.
Meanwhile, results of the Sunday’s triple-header kickoff of the Stag Beer Revival Cup saw wins for GT Panthers and GFC and a tie for Camptown and Police. In the first match of the day, Jamol Scott was the lone goal scorer for the GT Panthers in the 20th minute to put a wrap to the match, which saw some former national players featured in the Northern Rangers team.
GFC was very competitive in the second match and deservedly gained a 2-0 victory over Pele with goals by Lavaughn Enniss and national U17 player, Jermaine Padmore. In the final match of the evening between Camptown and Police, the Lawmen took the lead in the 17th minute, compliments of Kester Dundas’ goal.
However, a goal by Camptown’s Oziel Small in the 46th minute balanced the scores and earned his side an equal share of the points. Following the first match between Northern Rangers and GT Panthers, a march past was conducted with remarks made by Chairman of the GFA-IMC, Trevor Williams and Ian Alves, GFF’s Competitions Director, respectively.
The tournament had two kick-offs – Williams did the official kickoff at the start of the second match while Toledo kicked off the final match. The next fixture of the Stag Revival Cup will be released soon.
