Two taxi drivers who were arrested after police received reports of persons firing shots at Farm Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, were yesterday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The men, Amishwar Veersammy, 30, of Herstelling New Scheme, East Bank Demerara, and Devindra Sammy, 21, of Farm, East Bank Demerara, both taxi drivers, faced separate charges for possession of unlawful ammunition.
They were both represented by Attorney-at-Law George Thomas and pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
Particulars of the charges alleged that on August 19, at Farm, East Bank Demerara, they each had .9mm live ammunition in their possession when they were not the holders of firearm licenses enforced at the time.
According to the police, ranks at the Providence Police Station in responding to reports of persons discharging firearms indiscriminately, went to Farm Squatting Area, where they found two motorcars which they searched.
A single .9mm round was found in each of the two vehicles. Two spent shells of the same calibre were also found next to one of the vehicles. No firearms were found.
During a petition for bail, Attorney Thomas told the court that neither of his clients are flight risks. He added that they don’t have pending matters before the courts or convictions to their names.
The lawyer further went on to state that his clients are willing to abide by any conditions attached to bail, even if it entails them lodging their passports and reporting to the police station until the hearing and determination of the matter. He added that on the day in question, police searched motorcar PVV 1984, of which Veersammy is the registered owner, and motorcar PWW 9864 for which Samaroo is the driver, and allegedly found the ammunition therein.
Police Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones made no objections to the defendants being granted pre-trial liberty.
According to Prosecutor Jones, the ammunition that was found in motorcar PVV 1984 was found on the ground next to the back seat, while the ammunition in motorcar PWW 9864 was found between the two front seats.
Additionally, the Prosecutor requested for both defendants to be released on bail in a substantial amount so as to secure their return to court to face trial.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan granted each of the defendants bail in the sum of $50,000. She ordered them to make their next court appearance on September 10, when they will appear at the Providence Magistrates’ Courts.
