Life in prison sounds very harsh, but so also is the evil act of rape which wounds and scars the victim for life.
Rapists pose a threat to boys/men and women/girls and the remainder of society.
The Sexual Offences Court situated in Courtroom Six at the High Court in Georgetown is warning that such cruel acts will not be tolerated.
In doing this, the specialized court which was launched in November, last year, has been imposing, what some are describing as harsh sentences on those who are convicted by a jury.
Almost all the judges who have presided over the Sexual Offence court have said that they hope the sentences imposed on perpetrators will serve as a deterrent.
With that being highlighted, many who were convicted in the last three Demerara assizes have been handed the life sentence, most of them with the possibility of being eligible for parole after serving a certain number of years.
These men, in some instances, shared close relationships with the victims.
They included fathers, step-fathers, uncles and grandfathers.
Last week Monday, Mark Campbell was handed his third life sentence in less than a year. He pleaded guilty to having anal sex with a five-year-old boy on April 16, 2013.
Court records show that Campbell is in the habit of taking advantage of young boys. In October, 2017, he was given two life sentences for similar crimes. The jury had found him guilty of engaging in sexual penetration with a boy in September 2011, when the victim was six years old. He, again, raped the lad on July 10, 2013, when he was eight.
For the acts that were committed between September 2011 and July, 2013, the court was told that Campbell violated the child in the worst way possible, taking advantage of a position of trust when the child was left in his care, as his mother worked at nights to sustain the family.
Also last week Monday, Rohan Daniels also known as “Shine Buck” was awarded his third life sentence.
On that occasion, Daniels, who is known for committing sexual acts on young girls, pleaded guilty to raping a nine year-old girl between January 1 and August 26, 2016.
In January of this year, Daniels went through a trial and was found guilty on two counts of sexual activity with a child/family member.
Based on the evidence presented, jurors were convinced that Daniels vaginally penetrated the minor between April 12 and 13, 2014, and then again on July 23, 2016. The girl was between the age of 10 and 13 when the acts were committed.
In relation to the two life sentence Daniels was given in January, they are to run concurrently and he does not become eligible for parole until after serving 40 years.
On that same day, a 67-year-old pensioner was given two life sentences for sexually penetrating a 10-year-old girl.
On May 30, 2014 and June 2, 2014 respectively, Abdool Jamil of West Coast of Demerara, engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16. The life sentences are to run concurrently. Jamil does not become eligible for parole until after serving 45 years behind bars.
According to information, on May 30, 2014, the young girl was left home alone. She then went to the residence of a relative. It was there that Jamil came and took the little girl to his home on the West Coast of Demerara.
During the night, while the young girl was sleeping he sneaked into the room and had sexual intercourse with her.
He had sex with the minor again on June 2, 2014, after which the child ran away and told a relative of what had transpired.
On August 22, 2015, the girl, who is now 14, went over to Lynch’s house where he forced her onto a bed and inserted his penis into her vagina without a condom. After the act, the little girl complained to her mother, who in turn, reported the matter to the police.
Also in August, Navindra Badal, 46, was sentenced to life imprisonment on each of two counts of rape of a child under age 16 years. He was convicted by a 12-member mixed jury.
Badal between July 1 and 31, 2016, engaged in sexual penetration of a child under age 16. And again between August 14 and 15, 2016, he sexually penetrated the minor. The two life sentences are to run consecutively and Badal stands the possibility of being released on parole after serving 45 years on each of the two life sentences.
On July 11, last, Sheldon Lynch, 46, of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara was handed another life sentence. On August 22, 2015, he engaged in sexual penetration with an 11-year-old girl. That was the man’s third life sentence in five months.
Back in March 2018, Lynch was given two life sentences which are to run consecutively. A jury, then, had convicted him for raping a 10-year-old girl on two occasions. They occurred between December 7, 2010 and January 25, 2013 in Essequibo.
The two life sentences which were imposed on Lynch in March are to run consecutively and he only becomes eligible for parole after serving 35 years on each.

The 34-year-old man who hails from Linden got the life sentence on each of the two counts. The prison terms are to run concurrently and he only becomes eligible for parole after serving 20 years behind bars.
