Fans are expected to flock the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) hard court in droves for the anticipated grand finale of the Mohamed’s Enterprise/ExxonMobil fifth annual futsal tournament tomorrow.
After six days of exhilarating play, two of the 20 teams entered into the competition will match skills for the grand prize of $600,000 and the championship trophy.
Since the inception, Figgy Green Jaguars have been the fan favourites to win the title and their free scoring and expert skill moves and dribbling have not only carried them to the final but also given deserved tribute to their voluble supporters. The Jags recorded the biggest margin of victory in the tournament, 20-0, and in their semifinal triumph over Quiet Storm, they banged in 14 goals which could’ve been a higher figure but instead they show boated for the entire second half of the contest to add extra animation to their fans.
Jags will be pitted against the young squad of Germans United. And, it will be wise to not underestimate the tenacity of the lads who have proven that they are a force to be reckoned with after making it thus far in Linden’s premier futsal tournament which has been sanctioned by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF). In their semifinal, a late goal help Germans edge out Goodfellas 3-2 to earn them their place in the final.
One thing which is certain is that tomorrow’s final will have a lot of fireworks and the young squad of Germans is not to be underestimated.
Action gets underway from 19:00hrs with Silver Shattas versus High Star (exhibition) followed by Quiet Storm versus Goodfellas in the third place playoff. The exhibition before the final will involve Harry’s Seven against Nut Genasyde.
The runners-up will receive a handsome $250,000, third $100,000 and fourth place $50,000.
The sponsors of the tournament include Mohammed’s Enterprise, ExxonMobil, Bakewell, Cell Smart, Power Producers & Distributors Incorporated (PPDI), Stag Beer, Dragon Stout, Sankar’s Auto Works and Bumper to Bumper Services. (Calvin Chapman)
