Albion and Blairmont have advanced to the next round of the Berbice Cricket Board/Mike’s Pharmacy Under-15 Cricket Tournament after recording victories on Thursday last. The 50-Overs Knockout Tournament is being sponsored by Lakeram ‘Mike’ Singh of Mike’s Pharmacy of Georgetown and is being organised by the Competitions Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board.
Playing in the second round, Albion crushed the hapless Achievers Cricket Club by 255 runs at the Albion Ground, while Blairmont had to dig deep to defeat No. 73 Cricket Club by just three runs in a rain affected game.
At the Albion Ground, fourteen years old Leon Cecil stroke a brilliant composed 104 to lead Albion to 293 for 6 from 50-Overs. Cecil, a solid right handed batsman struck five boundaries and received support from Tavendra Mangal 54, Meaaz Khan 25 and his young brother Damon Cecil 24. D. Mc Pherson 2 for 33 from 10 Overs and D. Joseph 2 for 28 bowled well for Achievers. Achievers Cricket Club in response were bowled out for a meager 38 with Extras topscoring with 23. Legspinner Pavendra Ganesh 3 for 3, offspinner Leon Cyril 3 for 4 and medium pacer Naresh Veersammy 3 for 4 were the best bowlers for Albion, which has produced five Test Cricketers over the last forty years.
Blairmont, one of Berbice top junior cricket clubs, had to pull out all the plugs to defeat No.73 Cricket Club at the No.73 M.Y.O Ground. Heavy early morning rain forced a reduction of overs from 50 to 25. Blairmont, after losing the toss were invited to bat first and were restricted to 64 all out in 18.1 Overs. S. Rupnarine top scored with 17, while left arm spinner Rawl Jabbar took 5 wickets for 19 runs off his five overs. Suraj Chatterpaul supported with 2 for 13 from 5 Overs. No.73 Cricket Club needing to score 65 runs from 25 Overs, suffered a major setback in the sixth over when their best batsman Vettori Latchman was dismissed for 05. Abbas Khan 18 and Rawl Jabbar 12 battled against great odds to create an upset victory for No.73 Cricket Club but a brilliant spell for fast bowling by medium pacer Vickendra Singh caused them to fall short by three runs. Singh bowled with good pace and control to end with the outstanding figure of 4.4 Overs 10 runs 7 wickets.
