The Ogle Cricket Club on the East Coast of Demerara successfully hosted a one week academy for male and female cricketers between the ages of 9-15. The Academy which was attended by 50 students from various clubs on the East Coast of Demerara concluded on Tuesday last with a simple ceremony where participants were given certificates for their efforts.
The programme which was done in collaboration with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) was sponsored by Scotia Bank and Rubis-Bel Air. Apart from learning the basics of the game such as batting, bowling and fielding, the youths also benefitted from lectures done on the topics such as laws of the cricket, HIV/AIDS, health and nutrition, discipline, importance of education, scoring, table etiquette and child care. Sessions were conducted by former Guyana senior all-rounder David Harper and Latchman Yadram with assistance from, National female player Heema Singh, Jitlall Jowahirlall, Anil Persaud, Ashmul Ali and umpire/match referee Moses Ramnarine.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, President of the East Coast Cricket Committee (ECCC) Ashmul Ali said the camp was well organised and the youths have shown improvement throughout the clinic.
He added that the camp was designed to help produce well-rounded individuals and expressed gratitude to the GCB, sponsors and other individuals who assisted in making the camp a success.
Ali stated that it is sessions like these that great cricketers are born and indicated the ECCC U15 tournament will commence tomorrow. (Zaheer Mohamed)
