The Magistrate at the Springlands Court, Charlyn Artiga, was surprised to learn that 19-year-old Alexander Denhart called “Shame Face” of 79 Village, Berbice, a prisoner who was supposed to have been remanded since June 6th, for the murder of Tilacknauth Mohabir called ‘Caiman’ during the course of a robbery on the high seas, has never seen the inside of a jailhouse. This was revealed by attorney for the number one accused, in what has come to be known as the “Suriname Pirate Attacks”, where a number of Guyanese washed up dead while many remain missing.
Joel Edmond, attorney for Nakool Manohar, called ‘Fyah’ 39, of Number 43 Village, Berbice, who was also charged with the murder of Mohabir, asked the magistrate how his client was in jail while his co-accused walks freely, after being charged with murder and remanded.
Edmond made claims of seeing Denhart walking freely outside of the CID Headquarters at Eve Leary in Georgetown. The Magistrate asked if there was any evidence to prove what he was saying was true and Edmond opted to show the Magistrate a photo he had of the prisoner roaming freely on the road.
Magistrate Artiga requested to see the photo and even had the special prosecutor in the matter have a look. The prosecutor said the quality of the photos was poor and was hard to verify.
However, the special prosecutor told the court that Denhart could not be kept at the New Amsterdam Prison for security reasons and that the State intends to use him as a witness; and he is a co-accused and made an application that he be transferred to Lusignan Prison.
Based on what the prosecutor related, Magistrate Artiga said she will ensure that Denhart is on remand, when being questioned. The person who brought Denhart to court could not say whether he was brought from New Amsterdam Prison or Eve Leary. The prosecutor requested two weeks for statements to be completed, with the intention of returning on August 29.
