A 38-year-old taxi driver who was allegedly busted with a gun after a high speed chase with the police on Thursday was yesterday charged and remanded to prison.
Devon Porter of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Particulars of the first charge alleged that on August 09, at Howes Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, Porter had a .38 revolver in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
It was further alleged that on the same day at the same location, he had a.38 ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence enforced at the time.
An unrepresented Porter was remanded to prison on the first charge, and was granted bail to the tune of $20,000 on the second charge.
According to reports, a mobile patrol commanded by a police corporal was in the Charlestown community when ranks observed motorcar PWW 149 which was “being driven by known character”, moving suspiciously.
As the patrol approached the vehicle in the vicinity of Russell and Howes Streets, the ranks signaled the driver to stop, but instead he accelerated and crashed into a post, in Lyng Street, Charlestown.
The police said that the occupants were ordered to exit the vehicle and during that process, the driver dropped a firearm which was immediately retrieved and found to be a .38 Smith and Wesson Revolver with a live round in its chambers. The driver and occupant were both taken into custody.
Back in court, Police Prosecutor Quinn Harris objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the nature of the offence and the gravity of the charge, and also the penalty the offence attracts.
The prosecutor also pointed out that Porter has a pending matter before the court for simple larceny.
