DEAR EDITOR,
On this Emancipation Day Anniversary, we should remind ourselves of some of the priceless legacies of our Ancestors; legacies if allowed to be sidelined, will take Guyana several more decades away from the kind of society they fought for, and we dream of… for ourselves and those who will follow.
Our Ancestors detested the total exploitation by foreign companies and the denial of fair treatment and benefits to them. It could not have been an easy decision for them to rebel against the far superior powers, but they did so without fear for their lives.
Vital as it is to remember the past and know where we come from, it is more important for us to ensure that past wrongs do not continue to come our way in modernised forms.
Even descendants of our Ancestors have become our exploiters. The massive oil find appears to give more opportunities for both foreign and domestic exploitation to continue.
Regardless where the exploitation comes from; whether it is financial, physical, mental or other, we should confront it with the same vigour.
Let us strive to fully emancipate ourselves, especially mentally, and become the difference between a Guyana as a model for others to copy…a country where fairness and justice are taken for granted…… and one where ‘we, the majority have to continue to struggle because we allow the few to abuse our loyalty’.
Bob Marley said it best…
“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind”.
