Dear Editor,
Please permit me to express congratulations to the Government team that recently visited the Kingdom of Norway. The team included the Minister of State Joseph Harmon, who upheld the President’s vision of the Green State Development Strategy; the Hon Minister of Natural Resources whose portfolio includes forestry, and Minister David Patterson with responsibility for infrastructure including electricity and the national grid.
Also present were the Chairwoman of the Guyana Forestry Commission Board of Directors Ms. Jocelyn Dow and Ms Pradeepa Bholanath who is our lead person in the GFC for the monitoring, reporting and verification component of the Guyana Norway Agreement.
We at the FPA were very pleased with the result of their visit and would like to congratulate them all on their success. Guyana needs a new agreement with Norway that would recognize the work done in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Now that we have unlocked the money for energy and a grid that will include solar generation we hope that we can proceed to a new round.
As the forest producers in Guyana we would like to see some of these old and new payments spent back into the forest sector. The GFC and all those involved in the forest need improved technology, less costly access to money, increased training to access foreign markets, the creation of downstream forest products and other forms of assistance to manage our forest resource even better than we do.
The entire sector has worked so hard to get us the current low deforestation rate and get no funds from this money directly. We have called for a revolving fund that would be a public private partnership. This will make a big difference to all of us and especially the community loggers who have the toughest time getting needed credit.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge the Kingdom of Norway for this initiative of 2009 and their continued relationship with Guyana. We also recognize the important role that WWF and CI play in this relationship. We look forward to a new round and urge the Government to work towards this.
Respectfully,
Deonarine Ramsaroop
Presdient of the Forest Products Association of Guyana
