New York (New York Daily News)- A cruel robber, who beat, bound and executed a Queens mechanic in his home, then torched him to destroy the evidence, will spend the rest of his life in prison.
A Queens Supreme Court judge on Wednesday sentenced Stephen Peters, 27, to life without parole for the Feb. 24, 2013 murder of 43-year-old Azeem Ali.
Peters and an accomplice, Jason St. Hill, who both lived around the corner from the Guyanese immigrant’s Richmond Hill home, forced their way inside his second-floor apartment just after midnight on Feb. 24, 2013.
Peters beat Ali, and the duo bound his hands and feet with electrical cord.
St. Hill, who was just 17 years old at the time, trained a gun on Ali’s head while Peters went to the basement of the 116th St. home and found a can of gasoline.
Peters demanded Ali’s bank card and PIN, then shot him three times in the head.
He then doused Ali with gasoline, torched him and his apartment, and used the victim’s bank card to withdraw $100 cash from a restaurant ATM. He tried to get more cash at a gas station ATM, but the card was declined.
A jury found Peters guilty of second-degree murder, robbery, kidnapping, arson and other charges in January 2017, but couldn’t reach a verdict on the top charge of first-degree murder.
He was retried in May, and found guilty on May 30.
St. Hill, who pleaded guilty to robbery in February 2017, is serving a 12-and-a half year prison sentence.
