Dear Editor,
Much to my surprise an ugly situation linked to lawlessness that affects adolescents as well, now prevails in my home village at Suddie Housing Scheme in Region Two. I found this situation after returning from a neighbouring country some five years later. Law enforcement agencies in the district are culpable for the predicament.
Before leaving by the backtrack route for Venezuela it was all peaceful and quiet. Now here is an illegal activity by an adult woman just next door to two serving members of the Guyana Police Force (G.P.F) and in close proximity of the Suddie Police station. It is getting me crazy.
The woman who also lives a few houses away from the Deputy Vice Chairperson for the Region is engaged in open selling of Bush Rum and shop rum. She is a large scale dealer operating from her home many underage persons make purchases and imbibe there as well.
While it is against the law for a juvenile to make purchases of any alcoholic beverage from a licensed shop, alcohol can be made readily available from the “illegal selling” of the commodity with detrimental effects more so the youngsters.
Undoubtedly, the woman is doing a lucrative business in violation of the law but who must protect the society from such barefaced and disrespectful actions?
Could it be that the woman is paying to get protection somewhere along the line as it would appear to be? But should this be the case, well then, it would be more of an encouragement to enhance an unlawful act rather than to suppress it.
A vigorous appeal to protect the community not as a favour but duty bound is being made for the police and the Customs and Excise Department to take the appropriate action against the perpetrator.
From the public standpoint, it looks really bad. It is a disgraceful and shameful reflection for the law not being enforced to protect the interest of the state.
Yours truly,
David Clarke
