West Indies Captain Jason Holder said he is looking forward bigger partnerships from his batsmen when the Regional side takes on Bangladesh in the second One Day International which is a day/night encounter tomorrow at Providence.
Speaking with the media following their 48-run defeat in the first ODI on Sunday Holder said they need to improve in all departments. “We need to improve in all departments, we missed a few chances in the field and that can hurt anybody in cricket. Our bowling can execute a lot better in the end and bowling to two set batsmen at the end isn’t easy, but I think we can execute a lot better in terms of our death bowling. Our batsmen need to build bigger partnerships and go deep as possible in the innings,” he added.
Holder pointed out that the run out Chris Gayle was a set back for the chase. “He was pretty much in and we were looking for him to go deep, I thought we weren’t up to scratch today in the field, we missed a few chances, and we bowled pretty well but lost our way in the last couple overs.”
Despite the loss Holder said there still some positives from the game. “We know the areas we need to tighten up on, but there were still some positives, Hetmyer played really well, generally some bowlers did well but we have to tighten up come Wednesday.
Hetmyer is one of the better players of spin in our dressing room and one of the few lefthanders we have in the middle order, he is young and talented, I encouraged him to go deep and he will develop as time goes on.”
When quizzed about the pitch, the Windies skipper stated that it was good. It was similar to when we play Pakistan, it took a little spin upfront, had a bit of moisture, but once you spend time on it you can score.”
Bangladesh victory came as a huge relief following their loss in the test series.
The batting of Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan set the foundation as they added over 250.
“If they didn’t bat that way on that turning pitch, we would have ended up on around 220 runs; we wanted to ensure that we reached 250. They felt chasing at least 250 would be a tough task here. They didn’t take up unnecessary time; they batted like the team had wanted them to,” said Bangladesh Captain Mashrafe Mortaza. Tamim went on to score his tenth ODI hundred but it was Bangladesh’s slowest in the format.
