Twelve days after the Junior Minister in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes, claimed that a security guard cocked his gun and pointed it at her, which caused the police to lock-up two security guards for 16 hours, there has still not been a confrontation in the matter.
Minister Broomes had claimed that two security guards attached to a firm providing security at a business establishment in Providence, East Bank Demerara, were abusive to her.
One even pointed a gun to her, she said. But CCTV video footage from the scene told a different story.
Police in a statement just after the incident said, “A thorough investigation has been launched following allegations of abuse and threats against a Minister of the Government and her driver at the parking lot of a popular established business premises located at Providence, East Bank Demerara, about 20:30 hrs Sunday.
”The police said that two security guards were arrested, detained overnight and released on their own recognizance yesterday afternoon. Investigations will continue.”
The Minister, who made claims of being fearful for her life, accused the security person of attempting to prevent her driver from carrying her up to the entrance of the New Thriving Restaurant, where she was going to get some food.
But contrary to the Minister accusations, video footage of the incident that was obtained by this publication, showed a totally different story.
The story, which was highly publicized saw a number of officials making comments on the matter. Minister Volda Lawrence reached out to one of the security guards and apologized after hearing the security guard’s side of the story and viewing the CCTV video footage of what really transpired.
This publication reached out to Commissioner of Police, David Ramnarine, to ascertain the status of the police investigations, and whether charges would be forthcoming.
“Let me get it clear. Statements were submitted by all the parties and a confrontation is to be held. I was advised that it was to be held sometime after noon today.
“I have not been updated, but as soon that has been completed, the file will be sent for advice.”
That was yesterday around 3:54 pm. When this publication reached out to one of the security guards, he claimed that he was told by the police that he needed to present himself at the Providence police to have a confrontation with the Minister.
But when his lawyer called, he was told that the confrontation will be between the driver and himself, since the Minister was unavailable. He declined, based on advice from his lawyer.
The security guard was of the opinion that it was only fair that a confrontation be held among all parties involved.
An attempt last evening to reach out to the Minister Broomes to have her comment on the lengthy hold up in this matter has proven futile.
