An attendant attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday made an appearance before a City Magistrate where an attempted murder charge was read to him.
Andre Ferdinand, 29, of 348 Cummings Street, Alberttown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that on July 15 at New Market Street, with intent to commit murder, he wounded Terry Clement.
Attorney-at-law Everton Lammy Singh, in an application to secure bail for his client told the court that his client has been an attendant at GPHC for the past 12 years and has no conviction.
He went on to tell the court that before the incident, his client made several reports at the Alberttown Police Station for the victim. The last report was made last Thursday.
He added that on the day in question, the victim was running his client with a cutlass and his client in trying to defend himself picked up a piece of wood and hit the victim.
However, Police Prosecutor, Neville Jeffers objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the fact that the victim is still hospitalised. He added that they are known to each.
Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that the victim was unarmed when the defendant attacked him with a piece of wood and dealt him several lashes about his body. He was picked up and rushed to GHPC were he is currently a patient.
The Magistrate after listening to the prosecutor submission granted the defendant $300,000 bail.
Conditions of the bail are that he must report every Monday at the Alberttown Police Station. She added that he must not go within 50 feet of the victim or cause anyone to contact him.
The father of two was instructed to make his next court appearance on July 26 for report.
