Tickets for Guyana Amazon Warriors first three match in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 tournament at Providence went on sale yesterday at the CPL Office on Camp & Quamina Streets and several fans rushed to secure theirs for the biggest party in Sport as soon as they were available.
Warriors Manager Omar Khan and Media and Marketing Officer John Ramsingh spoke to the Media at the launching. Tickets cost $5,000 for the Red & Greens stands, $3,000 for the Orange stand and $2,500 for the Grass Mound and are on sale from 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs on weekdays and 09:00hrs to 13:00hrs on Saturdays at the CPL office.
Seven matches, including the two play-off games will be contested at Providence and the Warriors will play their first three games in Guyana on Thursday August 9, Saturday August 11 and Sunday August 12.
The Warriors will return to South American soil for their final two games on the weekend of September 8 & 9 before the two playoffs are held on September 11 & 12. Khan confirmed that Shoaib Malik will Captain the Warriors and noted that this year Guyana has gotten more games than any of the previous years since CPL’s inauguration in 2013.
The Warriors side includes International Sohail Tanvir, Cameron Delport, Imran Tahir, Kuke Ronchi, and American pacer Saurabh Netravalkar while Sherfane Rutherford is in a side which includes Guyanese Test players, Devendra Bishoo, Veerasammy Permaul, Shimron Hetmyer and Kemo Paul.
Chadwick Walton, Jason Mohammed, Reyad Emirt, Roshan Primus, Gajanand Singh, Romario Shepherd and Akshaya Persaud are the other players in the Warriors squad. The Guyana based side, which Khan disclosed will begin their Camp here from August 2-7, will have one practice match on August 8 before battling St Kitts & Nevis Patriots from 18:00hrs on Thursday.
Skipper Chris Gayle, the all-time leading T20 run-scorer, will hope to lead the Patriots to their maiden CPL title while fans could expect fireworks from Evin Lewis and Carlos Braithwaite.
The Warriors next game is against St Lucia Stars whose team includes David Warner, Lendl Simmons, Darren Sammy, Kieron Pollard and Andre Fletcher. They then come-up against Barbados Tridents who will be spearheaded by Martin Guptill, Shakib Al Hasan, Hashim Amla, Dwayne Smith and Jason Holder.
Khan informed that this year the fans in the stands will be more involved in off the field activities
“The sun should not be a problem since only the St Lucia match on August 11 will start at 16:00hrs while the Barbados game will start at 18:00hrs as the first game” Khan pointed out.
“The Warriors could play six games in Guyana if they top the points table in the preliminary round. If we can do that we will play in the first play-off and if we win we go directly to the final in Trinidad” Khan said.
The Warriors has never won the title despite being the most consistent team; reaching three of the five finals. Khan puts that down to the mental side of the game. “The team that wins T20 Finals is the team that makes the least mistakes on that day” said Khan, who has been the Warriors Manager since 2013.
Large crowds are anticipated and expected to celebrate with dancing, colour, music, especially since the younger generation love of the shortest format of the game.
