Pele FC 47th Anniversary Fun-Day Tourney… Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton team edge Vibert ‘Durdy’ Butts to emerge victors

On a mission to continue empowering youths, Pele Football Club Alumni Corporation and its local beneficiary, Pele Football Club (PFC) on Saturday last hosted the PFCs 47th anniversary with a successful fun-day competition at the GFC Ground, Bourda.
Emerging as the champions of the senior knock-out competition was Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton’s team which edged Vibert ‘Durdy’ Butts’ side in the final, an exciting five goal thriller, 3-2.
In the build up to the final, Butts’ team had defeated Gregory ‘PT’ Stewart’s side 2-1, while Barton’s X1 trounced Clyde ‘Oiler’ Watson’s combination, 7-2.
There was also a youth component to the day’s proceedings which saw the Under-15 A and B teams battling to a 1-1 stalemate, while guest team, Sophia, prevailed by a 2-1 margin over Pele’s U-15s.
Michael Hunter was declared the Most Valuable Player of the senior tournament, while Tyresse Payne copped the Golden Boot trophy for scoring the most goals. Trophies were presented to the top four senior teams as well as the junior teams.
The Guyana Football Federation Executive Committee Member, Dion Inniss, Banks DIH’s Mortimer Stewart, Earl O’Neil both former national players, Barton and Butts assisted with the presentation of trophies and medals to the players.
On hand to share the moments with the players were Pele Football Club Alumni Corporation Directors, the USA based of Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton and Dennis Ivor Carrington as well as Vibert ‘Durdy’ Butts and a number of other long time members who reminisced on the good days of the club, noting that they will endeavour to bring back those days.
Both Barton and Carrington expressed thankfulness to the organiser, Prince ‘Socks’ Johnson, the players (past & present) and the fans for making the day a delightful one. They reminded that focus would continue to be on empowering the youths with a view of ensuring that they are given the opportunity to be the best they can be on and off the field of play.

A number of youths are currently enrolled as part of the Pele FC Alumni Scholarship Awards Programme which sees the student/athletes receiving a monthly stipend towards assisting them with their educational pursuits.
The Pele FC Alumni has also partnered with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and has inked a five-year contract as sponsor of the first time ever Intra Association Under-15 league in memory of Pele’s first President, Frank Watson.
This U-15 league follows on the heal of the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO) which also inked a similar five-year deal for the Under-17 level.
