East Ruimveldt received a sound 9-1 thrashing from South Ruimveldt yesterday afternoon at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on CARIFESTA Avenue to book the final spot in the girls’ final of the ExxonMobil under-14 schools’ football tournament.
Amanda Mackenzie and Annalisa Redman both netted hat-tricks during the victory while Latesha Sunderland bagged a brace and Angel Denny got on the score sheet with her lone goal which was scored in the 19th minute of the game for South.
Tamara Mendonca had given East Ruimveldt some hope of a victory after she fired her team ahead with the opening goal in the 12th minute but everything went downhill from there as South then scored nine unanswered goals after to secure their spot in the final where they will play Charlestown Secondary.
In the boys’ semifinal, Chase Academic Foundation overcame the stern test of Buxton Youth Developers by defeating them 3-1, earning their place in the final against North Ruimveldt Secondary in the process.
Jaleel Alendar placed Chase ahead early in the fifth minute before Tyrice Dennis held his nerve to expertly chip Chase’s defence and goalkeeper a minute later to equalise the score.
Leivin Mullin then demonstrated some brilliant skill to cut in from the left wing, beating two defenders before sending a rifle of a right-footed shot across the goal and into the back of the net for the winners to assume the lead for the second time in the match.
Brandon Solomon was determined not to be left off the score sheet and his 34th minute goal gave Chase some cushion as Buxton were going all out on attack; looking for an equaliser which they never found.
Since both teams had a total of 12 players that are currently encamped with the national under-15 squad, the boys’ semifinal matchup would’ve been more fitting of a final.
The boys’ and girls’ finals along with the respective third place playoffs will be completed this Saturday.
