The body of 18 year old, Ronaldo Gomes was fished out of the creek at the Splashmin’s Resort on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway on Saturday last, after going there with cousin and friends for an outing.
Gomes, who resided at 8 Norton Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, went to the creek with a cousin Richard Williams and other friends in a mini bus. They arrived just after lunch.
The police in a statement said, “According to Williams, about 16:00hrs they went to get ice outside of Splashmin’s and returned about 16:30hrs. Gomes then left them and said he was going and swim, while Williams remained in the bus. About 17:00hrs as they were preparing to leave, they made checks around the resort for Gomes but did not find him.
Williams said he then went to Highway Patrol Base, where he made a report and was accompanied by the police to the resort, where a search was carried out in the creek and Gomes’ motionless body was fished out of the creek with injuries to the head, face and arm, apparently from a boat propeller.
Several boats were traversing the creek during the course of the day. The scene was visited by a party of policemen, several persons were contacted and interviewed but no useful information was received. The scene was photographed by crime scene ranks and the body was taken to Lyken’s funeral home.”
When this publication visited the location, an individual who claimed to have spoken to an eyewitness, said he heard that the youth had jumped off the bridge into the creek and did not surface. Photos of the body show that most of the flesh from the left side of the face is missing. It appeared to have come in contact with a sharp object.
Family members and Gomes’s mother revisited the scene yesterday afternoon where Williams showed Gomes mother where the body was found and where boats were traversing in the water at the time they were there. Gomes’s relatives are asking anyone that would have witnessed anything to come forward with that information, as it would assist in the ongoing investigation.
